Author' Introduction:   

He is a post graduate in Engineering with PG in Training & Development. He has worked for 22 years in Manufacturing, Quality and HRD functions in Leading Indian Companies. He has undergone Extensive Training on TQM/TPM at Japan and an expert on 5S techniques in SAARC region. He is Vice-President, ABK-AOTS DOSOKAI in charge of 5S & TPM. Presented number of papers in international conventions in many countries including PIQC-Pakistan. He is heading a consultancy organization in India and offering specialized services in the area of TQM, 5S and TPM in India and abroad. He is at present initiating TPM projects with PIQC in 2 Lahore based companies.


In catching with World-class companies around the world, many Indian Organizations have started TQM/TPM journey to enhance quality and cut down waste and reduce cycle time. 5S techniques play a critical role in launching TQM and bringing a cultural change in the mindset of people in organizations. 5S is the foundation for achieving TQM/TPM and it takes considerable time and effort to implement and sustain the activity.

In this paper, the author is presenting the case study of 2 successful companies who have achieved world-class standards in 5S, which has led them to march towards BUSINESS EXCELLANCE AWARDS in India.

The following companies have achieved this feat:




INTIMATE FASHIONS is a large Multinational Group manufacturing Ladies’ inner Garments for US/UK/GERMAN Market. It employs about 1000 Women and it has won the 5S AWARD in the recent AOTS competition for BEST 5S PRACTICES. The case study will explain the success story.

HINDUSTAN LEVER is a part of UNILEVER GROUP and it is the best FMCG Company in India with perpetual Growth and profitability every year. The company has more than 40 manufacturing units spread all over the country and the Management is implementing TPM in various units. So far, 4 of their units have been certified by JIPM for I LEVEL TPM. As part of TPM, the company has successfully implemented 5S with score more than 80 out of 100. The paper will describe the linkage of 5S to TPM in one of the TPM certified units.
