Author’ Introduction:   

Lt. Col. Dr. Nawar Khan (Retd.) is a professional Mechanical Engineer. He has graduated from the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar in 1981. He did his MSc Mechanical Engineering (Specialized in Production Engineering) from the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore in 1995. Dr Khan has completed his Ph.D under a split Ph.D program of MoST from the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore and De Montfort University, Leicester UK in 1999. His field of specialization is Total Quality Management (TQM), particularly the ‘QUALITY AWARDS’. Recently, he has got MBA degree from AIOU specialized in HRM. He is also Certified Quality Assurance Lead Auditor for ISO 9000:2000. He is author of a number of national and international research publications. He is a member of IEP and lifetime member of PEC. Presently he is serving as Associate Professor at the College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Peshawar Road Rawalpindi, a constituent college of National University of Sciences and Technology, (NUST) Pakistan.


This paper aims at discussion on the progressive spectrum of quality practices and assurance system in an engineering institution, to exhibit the quest for quality excellence. The institution can be taken as a role model of continuous quality improvement in education which shall ultimately contribute to the social and economic development of the country.

Education is one of the basic ingredients of Human Resource Development (HRD). Educated Human Resource (HR) is the most productive member in every segment of a society. Development of HR is an individual as well as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Competition for excellence in education, like any other services, at national and global level is becoming fiercer day by day. To improve the quality of a society and exhibit the CSR in a befitting manner, an increase in the allocation of funds for education facilities in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is required. Adopting and practicing a standard quality education system is essential, however, assuring its effectiveness then become mandatory.

The main aim of the institution, presented in this paper, is to continuously enhance and assure the existing of a standard quality education system through different quality excellence initiatives. Some of these Total Quality Management (TQM) major initiatives includes the establishment of a Quality Management Cell (QMC), registration to ISO 9001:2000 international quality management system certification, Academic audit by a composite team of academia of  constitute colleges and institutions of the university and periodic inspection and assessment by the defense Head Quarter authorities. Establishment of Quality Education Cell (QEC) is another initiative being taken on the instructions of Higher Education Commission (HEC). Future focus on attaining TQM award in higher education can be another target being visualized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST).

This case study of success journey toward quality excellence in engineering education is presented here to exhibit the share in CSR in its true spirit. The continuous quality improvement process and assurance system will bring the institute to a status of an alma mater of engineering education in the country and will also enhance its ranking in the list of world universities.
